Hardwood floors need a protective layer to guard against scratches, dents and everyday wear. In Canada and the U.S. urethane, or urethane aluminum oxide, is the most common protective hardwood flooring finish. Urethane seals the surface of the hardwood, forming a solid, hard and effective protective layer.
Rather than sealing off the hardwood with a synthetic layer, an oil finish works to strengthen the natural fibre surface of the hardwood, thereby helping it to endure the comings and goings of a busy home or office. Oil finish, which has a long tradition in the flooring industry, is gaining popularity, due in part to premium European flooring brands.
Oil finished hardwood is considered a step up from urethane which is a synthetic material that completely seals the floor. On the other hand, oil finished hardwood provides a natural protection and is 100% VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) free. Meaning that it does not emit toxic chemicals in the air. In the short term, oil finished hardwood is slightly more prone to scratches and dents than urethane. However, minor scratches and scuffs to high-quality hardwood flooring products, such as our Stanley Cooper and the Solid Floor collections, are easily treated by hardwood care products.
In the long run, oil finished hardwood maintains its polished appearance because deeper cuts and grooves can be effectively treated to erase years of wear and tear. Plus, unlike urethane hardwood, oil finished floors can be spot-treated without the need to repair the entire floor.
Cleaning and maintaining oil-finish hardwood is similar to taking care of regular engineered hardwood or laminate flooring.
